Help Your Children Love Books and Science

One of the best things about homeschooling is the ability to learn along with our children! Another is sharing books with our children. If you’d like to combine these two pursuits, I have the perfect book for you!

Shark Dentists and Other Stories is a fun science-related book that’s great for children from preschool through about 4th or 5th grade. It is written from a Christian perspective, and it presents scientific information along with Biblical principles and beautiful illustrations!

There are five “short stories” contained within the book. Each short story tells about how a particular insect or animal is used by God to complete a certain task. For example—one short story tells about how ants help spread the seeds of wild violets to help them grow.

In the back of the book, you’ll find a section called “Things to Think About.” This section encourages children and parents to think more deeply about what they’ve read in the stories. It asks questions that you can discuss with your children and research if you want to learn even more together! Included are Bible verses that support the principle learned in each story.

The last section of the book is for parents. It includes references used to write the book. These references include Wikipedia references, Biblical references, and other sources where information was found. It might be interesting—especially for those who have children who love science—to look up and explore even more information together!

Because each story is told by an insect or animal and because the illustrations are so beautiful, children and adults will find the stories engaging and informative. So even if you have a child who isn’t normally interested in science, you may find that this book sparks an interest!

Another thing I love about this book is that it not only proposes a Biblical principle, but it also supports that principle with evidence both from nature and from the Bible. Yet it doesn’t belittle those who believe, for example, in evolution. It simply explains, in simple terms that a child can understand, why each Biblical principle is true and why each one cannot have simply happened by chance.

I wish this book had been available when my children were younger! It’s a great way to introduce children to the Bible, to science from a Biblical perspective, to beautiful art work, and to the fact that science can be fun and may be something your child wants to explore more deeply with you.

  1. My name is Amanda. I’m thinking of pulling my child out of public school and homeschooling her for 5th grade, but I don’t know how to start. I don’t know the law regarding homeschooling either. Can you help me? I’m lost.

    1. Here are some resources that might help you get started. First, I’m giving you a link to an article on our site. It explains how to get started and what you need to know, etc. Then is a link to HSLDA. They can tell you the homeschool-related laws in your state–since the laws vary from state to state. Last, you may want to apply to join our private Facebook Community. It’s a place where you can ask specific questions and get answers from homeschooling moms.
To look at the “getting started” homeschooling posts on the HHM site, go here: https://www.hiphomeschoolmoms.com/how-to-homeschool/
