My middle son is 3 1/2 years old and itching to learn right along with us. I use online printables, and of course, he reads books and does all the normal school activities we do throughout the day as well. However, I have yet to try a structured curriculum with him.
He was so thrilled when I told him that he was getting a new ‘school book’ in the mail. We started Learn the Alphabet with Skip and Daisy about a month ago.
This program includes a DVD and workbook. The DVD is broken up into lessons by letter. Each lesson is no more than 2-3 minutes or so. In the lessons they review the letter’s sound and words that begin with that sound. It also does a quick review of letters already covered. For example, if you start your child on the Letter D lesson, the DVD will quickly review A, B, and C sounds first.
The DVD instruction is very simple and straight forward. No bells and whistles, music or catchy tunes. I say this not as a negative because, as many of us know, some of our children are easily distracted by the ‘extras’ of a program.
My son needs very consistent, basic lessons. He is also young, so the short snippets worked well for him. I also liked that I could start with whatever letter I wanted, not necessarily at ‘A.’ I feel my kids do best when I start with the letters of their name – in this case, B-R-O-D-Y.
The workbook is a basic workbook that includes trace-and-write lines using Zaner-Bloser style handwriting. There are two pages dedicated to each upper and lower case letter. My son did well with the workbook. By which, I was VERY surprised.
I’m not a huge fan of having children write on designated lines – especially this young. My oldest child would not have been able to stay patient enough to complete a few letters of the workbook pages. However, my three-year-old who is using this program is very patient and truly enjoys structure, therefore it worked well for him. You know your child best! You could easily use the DVD and reserve the workbook until they are developmentally ready as well.
Overall, this is a great basic program for reviewing letters and sounds. It may be just the ticket for a student who needs basic instruction, without a lot of distraction.

Liz was a cheerleader swept off her feet by the football player back in high school. They’ve been married nearly eight years and are the proud parents to three young boys. She’d always envisioned working and sending her kiddos off to school so she could live the ‘normal’ American dream. However, life and the Lord surprised her and she’s learning to ‘redefine having it all’ while being a homeschooling housewife. She enjoys finding strength from God’s word, the Today show, talking on the phone with friends, and being real about finances and parenting. She’s blogging about homeschooling and much more over at The Hesitant Housewife.
