Learn the Alphabet with Skip and Daisy Review & Giveaway {Closed}

My middle son is 3 1/2 years old and itching to learn right along with us. I use online printables, and of course, he reads books and does all the normal school activities we do throughout the day as well. However, I have yet to try a structured curriculum with him.

He was so thrilled when I told him that he was getting a new ‘school book’ in the mail. We started Learn the Alphabet with Skip and Daisy about a month ago.

This program includes a DVD and workbook. The DVD is broken up into lessons by letter. Each lesson is no more than 2-3 minutes or so. In the lessons they review the letter’s sound and words that begin with that sound. It also does a quick review of letters already covered. For example, if you start your child on the Letter D lesson, the DVD will quickly review A, B, and C sounds first.

The DVD instruction is very simple and straight forward. No bells and whistles, music or catchy tunes. I say this not as a negative because, as many of us know, some of our children are easily distracted by the ‘extras’ of a program.

My son needs very consistent, basic lessons. He is also young, so the short snippets worked well for him. I also liked that I could start with whatever letter I wanted, not necessarily at ‘A.’ I feel my kids do best when I start with the letters of their name – in this case, B-R-O-D-Y.

The workbook is a basic workbook that includes trace-and-write lines using Zaner-Bloser style handwriting. There are two pages dedicated to each upper and lower case letter. My son did well with the workbook. By which, I was VERY surprised.

I’m not a huge fan of having children write on designated lines – especially this young. My oldest child would not have been able to stay patient enough to complete a few letters of the workbook pages. However, my three-year-old who is using this program is very patient and truly enjoys structure, therefore it worked well for him. You know your child best! You could easily use the DVD and reserve the workbook until they are developmentally ready as well.

Overall, this is a great basic program for reviewing letters and sounds. It may be just the ticket for a student who needs basic instruction, without a lot of distraction.

  1. What an amazing program. My hats off to Liz for this. How proud your boys must be of their mom. This is an amazing gift and an amazing program. I’d love this for helping homeschool my granddaughter. Being on disability would make winning way easier on us, but regardless I’ll be using this program to help teach my granddaughter when our homeschooling begins again in a week, though i have been doing a light Math, Vocab, Reading & Religion summer program with my 7th grader. I do look forward to a full schedule with dd and my gd. Thank you Liz for the opportunity to win this amazing gift you developed. Blessings to all in the new school year. Enjoy the rest of summer.
    God Bless,
    Kimmie

  2. I like that the lessonsare broke down by letter and each lesson is no more than 2-3 minutes or so long. With a son who has a short attention span this seems very good.

  3. This looks like such a great beginner curriculum without being overwhelming. Looks like something my little one would love!!

  4. This looks like a great addition to what I am already planning for my younger kids for the first six weeks of school. We plan to learn a letter a day – sound, letter formation, etc… We are also reading a picture book together every day…one that starts with the letter of the day. We did a practice day earlier this summer, and they are so excited that we will be starting school on August 6th! That makes me happy!

  5. I love that it is a short lesson and taught in snippets, instead of the firehouse method by most dvd’s.

  6. This loooooks soooooooooooooo Coooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooool….This would be perfect for my youngest to use…Thanks so much ! 🙂

  7. It looks like something that would keep my 4 year old’s attention and help him feel like he has his own scool work! Love the simple workbook.

  8. Thanks for your review. I hadn’t heard of this program before. I am always looking for ways to help my slower 3yo learn the basics. I like that it’s a combination of video and writing.. It might be a good motivation for him to try some of the latter. 🙂

  9. Great post Liz. Teaching the kid’s through letters and sounds is an amazing concept. Children really love this kind of teaching. I was just surfing the net to gather some home school information so that I can provide my kid’s a quality teaching. I have already gathered some information from http://homeschoolthruhighschool.com/ and I am going to add the concept of Learn the Alphabet with Skip and Daisy as the priority lesson for my kid’s. Thanks for the post Liz.
