Teaching Self-Government Review

I was so excited when my family and I received the Teaching Self-Government Implementation Course to use and review. Teaching Self Government (TSG) is a program created by Nicholeen Peck. The resources included the book (Parenting: A House United) and online access to all of their materials, recordings, videos, and much more. There are also 4 optional children’s books that I received to review.

I immediately starting devouring all of the information in the book as it was something that we needed in our family. I soon discovered that the key to having a peaceful and disciplined home was for the parents to learn to self-govern first. Wow! That was an eye-opener for me!

As I was reading the book, I marked all of the areas that I wanted to revisit and work on. I made a plan of action and immediately started implementing some of the principles that I was learning in the book. There is so much information in the book that is invaluable that I highly recommend reading it and revisiting the highlights at least once a year thereafter, so when you read the book, mark away!

I started following the plan of action. I saw immediate positive results in both myself and my children. They are 3.5 and 5.5 years old, but this program (which is really more of a lifestyle) is for children of all ages as well as teens and even adults. When I began reading the children’s books to them, they recognized the wording in the book because it was similar to the wording I was using while teaching them self-government. (Also, I think this is a good place to note that the term “self government” has to do with parents and children learning to govern their own behavior, attitudes, and so on.)

Once I was 3/4 of the way through the book, I started to implement more of the plan. I wanted to see where I was going first. We learned the 4 Basic Skills, which are essential for becoming a self-governed individual. I cannot tell you how important it is to learn these four skills. We applied these in everything we did during the day. Consistency is key and, since these principles are so important, I wanted to make sure we had them down before adding more.

Once we all felt confident about how the 4 Basic Skills work, we started to have our Couple’s Meeting and our Family Meeting once a week. These specials times were great to discuss our Family Vision, our Family Standard, and other things that we are working on as a family, including events that will be going on during the week. (The program teaches exactly what these meetings and standards are all about even though I’m not going into great detail about them here.)

Next, we added the Mentor Meetings to the mix. These are one-on-one meetings with one child and Mom and Dad. These are great opportunities for us to get to know each child better, to discuss that child’s goals for the week, to discuss behaviors that he/she needs to work on, and to show him/her our love and undivided attention. Our Mentor Meetings are going great! But again, consistency is key, so we are still trying to find a good time to schedule these weekly. TSG Kids Books

Last, we began implementing our SODAS. No, I’m not talking about a fizzy drink. I am talking about the acronym SODAS (Situation, Options, Disadvantages, Advantages, and Solution). It is a sort of “what-if” game. We pre-teach our children about possible (or present) situations and reason through the options and, after weighing the advantages and the disadvantages, they come up with the best solution.

All in all, I love Teaching Self Government. It has changed our lives! I am learning to self-govern first, not only for me to be happier and calmer, but to be a good role model for my children. You know the saying “You become who you hang out with?” As a homeschooling mom, I know that my children are with me the most and that I am their strongest influence. Therefore, I need to act the way I want them to act and be the adult that I want them to be as adults.

We make our lives better when we self-govern. We make our families better when we all self-govern, and we make our society and the world a better place when we can learn and live and teach self-government. Image the freedom! Imagine the possibilities!

I can honestly say that I wholeheartedly recommend this program to parents of children of all ages! In fact, even if you have teens, this information can be used successfully with them!
