Superwoman

How do you do it all? The mom with two children asks the mom with four.

How do you do it all? The mom with four children asks the mom with eight.

The truth is I think that most of us question why God allowed only 24 hours in a day, right?

The older I get and the longer I homeschool, I am convinced quite simply that our best is enough. I think the standard that I have elusively tried to measure up to during the the last 14 years of being a mother, can go live in the mysterious land of miscellaneous socks and pacifiers now.

His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3

The absolutely only thing that I as a child of God can do is my best. Nothing less. Whatever results that produces is simply enough. I kinda feel like running to the garage and digging out my old high school cheerleading outfit and doing a few herky jumps over that one {except the outfit will never fit, well maybe on my thigh}. It is a freeing thought, right? My best is something that I can do.

What does my best look like? The answer came to me a last Saturday in the wee hours of the morning.

Every so often, I pull a late night of busting my tail to make significant headway on my to do list. Last Saturday was one such night. I had a few things to do and I wasn’t going to bed until they were done. I finished my items at about 2:30 am. However, I had not done my workout yet. You see, I decided recently to do Insanity. I want to kick my fitness up to the next level and a few people that I know have used this work out with pretty stunning results. So, after a week or two of fighting myself, I committed to 9 weeks of strict calorie counting, multiple small meals a day, and 6 grueling workouts a week plan. So, my workout had to be done, regardless of the time.

I have always noticed a startling difference between watching workouts on the Biggest Loser and then seeing workouts in real life at the gym. Why do I trot on the treadmill watching HGTV at the gym? Is that all I can give? Let me tell you my friends, Insanity is as close as you’re going to find to a Biggest Loser type workout in real life. About half way into the workout last Saturday, I collapse on the floor for a brief moment, exhausted to the bone because I simply can’t do one more push up. I slightly hallucinate and think Jillian just might be there yelling over my shoulder. I realize that this is why I love this workout. It requires my best every. single. time.

I smile and keep going. This is my key. This is the secret.

Your best is your all. That’s it. It’s actually pretty simple.

Workout complete, showered, and comfy pajamas on, I slip all snuggly into bed next to my husband at 4 am. I am incredibly content and thanking God for daylight savings time. I press a couple of buttons and magically turn back time on this fabulous one day a year gift to the overachiever.

As I drift off to sleep, I think, about my best, in every single thing. From scrubbing toilets, to disciplining my children, to my health and fitness, to my walk with Christ, to my volunteer activities, to my grout cleaning skills, to my friendships, to my marriage, to my relationships with extended family, to my home decorating, to my lesson planning, to my diaper changing, my car cleaning, and my coupon clipping.

That is doable. It’s within reach.

The results, like Insanity, are going to be awesome. Not because of the chore chart you use, or the elaborate menu planning scheme you have selected, but rather because of what went into it. Your best. Your best is the magic that brings these things to life.

You’ve got the mad skills to get done what God has given you to do, my friends.

Rock that cape.

Go out there and make it happen.

  1. Darcy, you are right! We don’t have to be perfect. If we give it our best, though, then we simply have to leave the results up to God. Whether we’re homeschooling, working out, cleaning the house, or whatever else, God will take care of the results if we are obeying Him in whatever it is that we’re doing, and His results will be better than ours could have ever been! Thanks so much for a wonderful post!

  2. I feel like this was written just for me!

Thank you so much for a great post and making this newbie homeschooler feel better.

Good luck with Insanity!! I had to give it up a few months ago due to an injury but hope to complete it in the next few months.
