Pretty Up for Romance

(This post is for the moms. Dads, come back next time, okay? :-))

Let’s talk about romance – that warm, comfortable, sometimes spicy feeling that puts a smile on your face when you’re near the one you love. I’m talking about all the aspects of romance, not just intimacy but holding hands, warm hugs, truly enjoying being around your spouse.

How are things going in that department, anyway? Have you kissed your husband today? Were you glad to do it . . . or was it a chore?

We’re all homeschooling moms here. We’re busy. We’re tired. Our minds are cluttered with plans for tomorrow, next week, next semester. It’s hard to get in the mood for a loving hug, much less anything else.

What can we do about it? Can we do anything about it?

I’d like to suggest something that may sound funny to some women, but I know it can help to foster feelings of . . . well, attractiveness and interest, shall we say? My suggestion:

Do things to make yourself feel pretty. Yes, that’s it – simple but effective.

When we go through every day focusing on homeschool lessons, housekeeping schedules, co-ops, doctor appointments, and sundry other obligations, it’s so very easy – almost inevitable – to lose sight of being an attractive woman.

But you are an attractive woman!

Don’t believe me? Ask your husband. The trouble is, no matter what your husband thinks, you may not feel pretty at all or you may not even give it a second thought on most days. So do something to bring your attractiveness to the forefront of your mind.

Figure out what makes you feel better about yourself. It’s going to be different for every woman, but here are a few ideas:

  • • Wear nice clothes that flatter. (I tend to wear my oldest, most worn out clothes every day simply because I’m not going anywhere. How about you?)
  • • Shower everyday, maybe in the afternoon just before your husband gets home from work. (Surely I’m not the only one who skips sometimes . . .)
  • • Fix your hair. Put on make-up. Paint your nails. Shave your legs.

The key is to find out what makes you feel pretty and desirable. The better you feel about yourself as you go about your day, the easier it will be to accept . . . and to welcome . . . and then to initiate a gentle touch, a kiss, a cuddle. And to truly enjoy that closeness.

Remember, it’s okay to be your husband’s “girl” instead of “mom” sometimes! In fact, it’s healthy for your kids to see some of the romance that results – it teaches them what a healthy marriage looks like. So go ahead and have fun being pretty! Your husband (and your children) will thank you.

  1. Really great post. I TRY to remember this but sometimes it’s easier not to… one day skipped becomes a week skipped.

  2. Great post, and one that I am so happy you weren’t afraid to post. I think one of the worst side effects of the sexual/feminist revolution is that so many women think it’s wrong to want to feel “pretty”, especially if it’s “for” her husband. I don’t know about you, but I always feel better about myself when I know I’m wearing a nice-fitting outfit, my hair is done, my nails are painted, etc. Sometimes, it’s just about putting on a nice pair of shoes instead of my usual sneakers. It makes me remember that I am feminine and it reminds me and my husband that we are different for a reason and that those difference should be respected and appreciated and not ignored.

  3. LOVE THIS! Way to go and stick it out there! I am a busy mom with four kids ages 16 months to 5 years and I am 6 months pregnant with #5. We have just started homeschooling “officially”, I am preparing for baby, we are looking at moving, oh yeah and ALL my children so far are boys! So some days try as I may NOTHING seems to get done, I am in pj’s at 5:30, the boys all are still in pj’s, and I haven’t even considered dinner! But I try to rush to get dressed and look more adult and sophisticated and pj’s allow before 6! And it is worth the rush each time!
