Ballerina Smoothie Recipe

Sharing is caring!

Summer is here, and one of my daughter’s favorite things to eat for breakfast or a snack during hot weather is a Ballerina Smoothie. She loves them, and so do I! And because they’re so simple to make, she can make them on her own.

I don’t remember exactly where or when we first saw this recipe, but I think it came from a church cookbook. The original recipe was good, but we tweaked it to make it even better!

In order to be prepared to make this recipe, I always keep some bananas and strawberries in the freezer. My kiddos love bananas, but sometimes we take too long to eat them, and they start to get too ripe. Whenever that happens, I peel them and freeze them. I buy unsweetened frozen strawberries at the grocery store and keep them in the freezer too. You could use the sweetened ones, but you really don’t need to. These smoothies are delicious without any added sugar.

This photo is from years ago when we first started making these smoothies together. Cell phone cameras have come a long way since those days!

The other ingredients you’ll need are a 6-ounce container of yogurt (whatever flavor you like that goes well with strawberries and bananas) and some white grape juice (or apple juice if you prefer) without any added sugar. That’s it! Of course you can throw in some blueberries or cherries if you want to, and you can use milk instead of juice if you’d rather. If you substitute milk instead of juice, though, you may want to add a couple of tablespoons of sugar if your smoothie isn’t sweet enough.

First, Mary Grace puts in a 6-oz. container of strawberry yogurt. (She uses regular yogurt, but I like to use Greek yogurt when I make them.) Then she adds 2 frozen bananas and a big handful of frozen strawberries. Finally, she pours in enough white grape juice to almost cover the fruit.

After adding all of the ingredients, she blends it until it is the consistency she wants. (She likes for it to be very thick and creamy but drinkable.) Then she pours the mixture into 4 small plastic cups. She drinks one, I drink one, and we cover the other two with plastic wrap to drink another day. Of course you can pour yours into whatever size cups you want and drink as much as you want!

When she takes one out of the freezer, she takes the plastic wrap off and microwaves it for 30 seconds. Then it’s a good consistency for eating with a spoon. If she wants to make it drinkable, she stirs it and microwaves it for 30 more seconds. And that’s all there is to it!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 or 2 frozen bananas
  • 8 or 10 unsweetened frozen strawberries
  • 6-oz container of your favorite yogurt
  • white grape juice or apple juice to cover other ingredients in blender

Instructions

  1. Put yogurt in blender.
  2. Add frozen bananas and frozen strawberries.
  3. Pour in enough juice to cover bananas and strawberries (or almost cover them).
  4. Blend until it’s the consistency you like!
  5. Pour into cups and enjoy!

Notes

You might want to start with less juice than you think you’ll need in order to keep your smoothie from turning out too thin–especially if you want to be able to eat it with a spoon. You can always add more juice if it’s not as thick as you’d like.
