A Girl’s Guide to Home Skills Review

Back in January I was given the opportunity to review The Homemaker’s Mentor Print Issues One and Three. I found so many useful articles in both of those issues. Naturally I was thrilled to now be given the opportunity to review their Girls Guide to Home Skills. This is a guide for mothers to help prepare their daughters for the many tasks of managing their own homes in the future.

A Girl’s Guide to Home Skills is over 170 pages, split into color-coded sections. Each section takes you through the different areas of a home, from the bathroom to organized closets, and even tidy yards and porches.

The first thing that struck me right from opening the package when it arrived was the quality of this book. The Print Issues have a magazine style binding while this Girl’s Guide has a nicely laminated front and back cover, as well as a sturdy spiral binding. It is printed on quality paper with reproducible charts. All this makes it so easy to reference and use the Girl’s Guide to Home Skills.

My 12 year old daughter’s favorite section is the one on pantries. From the lists of what to stock in your pantry to a month by month breakdown of what to do for your pantry and a guide to making stock. It is packed full of useful tips and tricks that even I could add a few of them to what I am doing at home now!

Even though she doesn’t have her own Hope Chest yet, she loves the antique trunk that houses all of my keepsakes and is working on filling a plastic bin until she has a Hope Chest of her own. The section on Hope Chests gave her some helpful ideas on what else she could be collecting for hers.

As her mother, I love the inclusion of checklists for each section. It helps to ensure you don’t miss something that you might think is obvious. For instance, I recently asked my daughter to run the dishwasher, a few minutes later we had soap bubbles all over the kitchen! I just assumed she knew the dishwasher detergent was different from dish soap. Throughout this Girl’s Guide to Home Skill’s there are plenty of lists to remind you of what needs to be done for each room. Hopefully this will ensure that you don’t leave anything out!

Last, but certainly not least I appreciate the type A neatness and organization of this whole guide. As the House Keeper’s Motto states, “A place for everything, and everything in its place.”

Each section will take you through the areas of a home, offering checklists, scheduling charts, and detailed instructional home lessons to teach your daughter the necessary skills for housekeeping and making a home-sweet-home.

  1. I have one daughter in my home. The thing that intrigues me the most is that I would be able to teach her things that I wasn’t taught and help prepare her more for her future home. Ilove that they give you check lists as well 🙂

  2. I have two girls as of right now. I was never taught much about homemaking, but am now a sahm trying to impart on my girls something I had to learn the hard way. It would be great to have a resource showing me how to show them.

  3. I have 6 daughters. Slowly but surely I have been teaching them how to manage a household, but I would so enjoy a little boost like this book!

  4. I only have one daughter right now (along with 5 boys!). What intrigues me the most about the Girl’s Guide is the fact that *I* could learn so much right along side my daughter! I was never well trained in homekeeping, and have had to learn on my own, so this guide would be great for both of us!

  5. I have one daughter. I love the fact that this book shows good organizational skills, because I am lacking in that, and could use some help teaching them to my daughter!

  6. I have five daughters! I never was super clean when I was younger but that changed when I became a wife and mother. I see my girls lacking some skills and this would be a great way to help them along especially in the area of organization. Thank you for the offer!

  7. I have three sweet girls in my home and we are currently working on building housekeeping skills. I love the idea of a book that includes all parts of the home and has checklists to make sure you aren’t missing something. Great idea!

  8. With 3 girls still at home I’m sure there is a wealth of great information. My pantry is in need of a major redo maybe that is something we could do together.

  9. I have two girls in my family, but really I need this book for me to learn with my daughters. I didn’t get this kind of training as a child, and a guide for children would be really good for their mom!

  10. I have three girls at home, 7 years to 8months. I’ve started teaching the two older basic Collins, sewing, etc., but this sounds like a great book to help. I admit sometimes I don’t feel like I’m teaching enough of the ‘basic’ skills!

  11. I have one daughter. This sounds like a great resource. I may have to read the sparkling clean bathroom section to my two boys 🙂

  12. I have 3 daughters, one in her teens and then a toddler and a baby. I’d love for the teen to learn these skills for herself, but also to model them to her younger sisters who already look up to her.

  13. I have 3 girls. One is a disabled adult that could benefit enormously from this book as she prepares to live on her own. My other 2 girls could also benefit. I think we would utilize the pantry and closet sections as those always seem to get out of control and we never manage to get them organized or stocked quite right (As more than 20 yrs in this Mom role, I should have this figured out-but it is a skill that needs to be learned-not something you “figure out”). Thanks for the great offer. I know it will be of use to anyone who wins it!

  14. We have we have 2 daughters (1 son) and a mystery baby due in october. I was never taught how to “be a woman/proper girl” by my mother and I so want my daughters to have that opportunity. I’ve had to learn how to do all the household things myself when old (bad) habits were already established. I hope to give my girls a hands up in life!

  15. i have two girls, and I can see this book being
really valuable. I am really interested in checking
    it out. thanks!!!!

  16. This sounds great! I was just thinking I need to go through cleaning tasks step by step with the kid this summer. They can pick up and clean when I tell the what to do, but they are lost when it comes to big jobs. I usually just do things myself, because it seems easier than showing them. I know they are at the age where they can take more responsibility for their rooms!

  17. I think my daughter would really enjoy this! She is already a huge help around our home. I think going through this with her would be a great help to me too!

  18. I have one daughter. I guess what I like most is the organized way it covers so many topics. It sounds like she could take it, read it herself, make her own notes, and be ready to implement it in our home so she is ready when she moves out on her own. Your review also made me think that I should clear out my hope chest that resides in her room and turn it over to her. Thank you for that idea.

  19. I only have 1 daughter and she is always interested in how to organize a home. She is only 9 and I would love to have something like this to help train her up!

  20. So far we only have 2 daughters (and one son) but who knows what the next kids might be =) I would love to start our 2 daughters with something like this!!

  21. I have two daughters, but am in the process to adopting two more, and I love the idea of this book, I wish I had this to help shape my idea of home keeping being fun and a “right way” to do it and think about it.

  22. I have 2 children so far I am not a feminist by any means but I am sure I would use the book for both my son and daughter. The man I married had a house cleaner growing up and I am convinced that my son’s future wife will not have to suffer as I suffer lol maybe I could even get my husband to get into the order of things If I had a better order myself

  23. I have one daughter. She is 12, and we are slowly incorporating more “trainable” things into our homeschool life. Using this book would be a great resource!

  24. I have one daughter and a niece with me frequently. This would be great. I love lists and organization, which it sounds like this book would,ne appealing in that way. And,being able to teach my daughters thinks I wish I had learned early would,be great. Thanks

  25. I have two girls in my house. What I like about A Girl’s Guide is that it will help steer her in the right direction and know that being clean and tidy is not just something that mom want her to do know but it is me helping her with what she will be doing as a grown woman.

  26. I’m so disappointed to learn that apparently Homemaker’s Mentor doesn’t sell these girls’ guides anymore. I can’t find them anywhere on their website, and your link doesn’t show them in their store anymore. We had bought 2 sets each of some of the guides; they weren’t available all at one time, so I purchased them as they came out. Apparently, I missed buying some of them somehow, and they don’t seem to be available anymore. Sad!
