Classical Phonics is a deceptively simple little book our teachers and families use constantly in both kindergarten and first grade. It consists of phonetically arranged word lists for students to practice their growing phonics skills. In a word list there are no context clues, so the learner must rely on his mastery of letter sounds. For instance, if your child can pronounce each word in this list correctly – pot, pat, pit, put, pet – he knows his short vowel sounds, and you can move on to long vowels! If not, he needs more practice, and Classical Phonics is the most effective tool we know of to address the repetition that young ones need when learning to read. Classical Phonics can be used as a supplement to any phonics program, and covers nearly all English phonograms and sounds taught through second grade. Classical Phonics is your handy tool for phonics practice and for building confident readers.

I love this program for reviewing phonics skills. I have a struggling reader and we use the lists as regular practice to help cement the phonics skills. He is also a reluctant reader. So the lists provided provide practice without excessive reading.

If you don't want endless worksheets or busy work and you plan to supplement with hands-on learning activities then this would be an excellent spine or map to follow to build your own phonics lessons. It is a comprehensive reference of student pages with all the phonics sounds listed, images and words to read. Parent/teacher instructions are printed on the bottom. You could follow this and your student would learn to read as they master the sounds on the pages and work through the book. You could also use it as a resource along with phonics curriculum to review and make sure students know all the sounds. You could use it for phonics practice to remediate a student who needed a stronger foundation in phonetics. It is a great comprehensive reference. Very simple but thorough.
