For when you’re feeling weary – don’t give up.

One of our scripture verses for our homeschool program this week was:

“Let us not grow weary in doing good for in due season we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.”  Galatians 6:9

It also seems to be one of the verses that pops up quite often at our local homeschool meeting.  Let’s face it, we can all grow a little weary sometimes.  And many of us at some time or another has just wanted to give up altogether.  Especially when it comes to this huge, full-on, crazy all encompassing task of educating our children at home.

So, weary is defined as:  feeling or showing tiredness, especially as a result of excessive exertion.  And well, I think most homeschool Moms would agree that we excessively exert ourselves continually for our children.  And some seasons are much more challenging than others, no doubt.  Right now, praise God, I am in a season of not too much weariness.  I am actually even starting to see some of that promised harvest.  But I also recognize that seasons shift and children go through various stages and levels of maturation.

I remember all too well those days of intense weariness though.  Oh yes, those hard, hard days of seemingly unbearable weariness.  Those days when you feel like chasing down the school bus so your ‘spirited’ five-year-old can climb right aboard, thank you very much!   The days when you doubt everything about your choice to homeschool because your knee deep in cloth diapers, the lunch is burning, your house is an explosion, and no your 8-year-old can’t read and your 6-year-old is naked on the back deck – again.

Yes, those days – they are the days when we are so tempted to let ourselves grow very weary in doing this good thing of homeschooling.

Some days it feels like the ‘due season’ for harvest will never, ever come.  But it will.  It’s a promise from God and God sticks to His promises.

Because when all your doubts pile up and your limbs are hard to move and your head swirls, and you’re not sure you can do one-more-day, there is a promise.  Do not grow weary in doing good – in due season (at the right time) you WILL reap a harvest (of good spiritual fruits in yourself and in your children) if you do not give up.

Maybe you walked through a whole lot of weary days this school year.  Do not give up.  Pray.  Pray for the strength to keep going every day and that joy would find you again.  Fill your heart and mind with truth.  Find friends who can support you and speak life into you.

Maybe you are reaping the harvest.  Pray.  Pray for your sisters who are still treading the ‘weary’ ground.  Find a sister who needs a lift and a hand and help her through the ‘do not give up’ days.

The bible says there is a season for everything.  A season for that ‘do not give up’ hard work and determination.  For totally relying on Christ, in whom I can do anything.  For trusting in the promises when there’s nothing else left.  Then, praise God, there will come that season of Harvest when we will fall to our knees and cry our in thanksgiving for His faithfulness in seeing us through and fulfilling His promise.

Do not give up.  Do not stop doing good.  The harvest will come.  In the right time.

(hugs)

  1. This is a great post! People homeschooling through the summer can sometimes feel so discouraged when they see their friends being carefree. Don’t compare to others. Do what you need to for your own family. God will supply the strength!
