Natural Bug Spray

I am one of those people who must have a neon sign to bugs that screams, “Come get some!” Bugs like to chew on me and I spend most of the warm months scratching.

I like prevention.

I really feel sick when people use those chemical bug sprays. They smell disgusting and aren’t great to put on your skin. Use something more natural that bugs don’t like.

Sick bugs. Healthy kids.

You really just need two ingredients. It’s super simple.

Carrier oil:

  • Affiliate button 4 200x200 Coconut oil for a cream – mix 8 oz. with 40-50 drops of essential oils
  • Witch hazel for a spray – mix 4 oz with 40-50 drops of essential oils. Add water to fill an 8 oz. spray bottle.

Essential oils:

One oil will do the trick. Create a fun blend that’s just right for you and your family. We love the scent of Lemongrass. A great fresh blend is Rosemary, Lemon, and Lavender. We diffuse that all the time! We always diffuse Lemongrass or Purification when we go camping. I created my family’s bug spray with Rosemary, Lemongrass, Lavender, Lemon, and Citronella. It smells divine, not at all like those chemical bug sprays that I can almost taste after spraying.

Be sure to use glass bottles and jars.

If a sneaky bug does make it through that 1 millimeter squared bit of space on your skin, Purification works like a charm on the itch.

Isn’t it wonderful that we can smell nice and be healthy while making it uncomfortable for flying critters with our natural bug spray?

If you use essential oils, what are your favorites?  How do you use them?

  1. I have used oils from rose mountain and did just link up with someone from Doterra , I am very curious to compare the oils from young living. My family has had more illness this year than ever and we strive to use herbal and holistic remedies. For me oils is the next step.

    1. I have tried both those brands and I really like the seed to seal promises from Young Living. I know all the execs and many of the YL leaders and their intregrity is in comparable.

  2. “Be sure to use glass bottles and jars.”

May I ask what the reasoning is behind this? Why is plastic not okay? Do you recommend the same when storing DIY foaming hand soap, shampoo, etc? Thanks!

  3. I made a flea repellant/bug spray that I can use on our dog as well as our family. It contains lavender, citronella, cedarwood, and rosemary. The cedarwood is a great mosquito repellant.

  4. How are you supposed to spray it on with a “glass bottle or jar”? Might be a silly question…but it does say bug spray lol
