Freedom, Adventure and Homeschooling; A Teen’s Perspective

I have been homeschooled since I was 3 and have loved almost every minute of it. I don’t remember a single time when I did not want to be homeschooled by my mom and dad. Being a homeschooled child has had its ups and downs, but I don’t know a part of this life that doesn’t. I have 5 siblings: 1 sister and 4 brothers, so being homeschooled is quite an adventure for my family and me to enjoy together.

All of us are homeschooled and enjoying it, even if we sometimes complain about our homework. I also enjoy the freedom it gives me, and the flexibility of my schedule is a bonus. Being able to go places during ‘school hours’ makes some of our field trips way less hassle. I am not a fan of surprise field trips, but sometimes they can be fun. When I was younger, I loved going to museums and such. I enjoy some of the stuff we do now, but mostly I just stand by and watch my siblings have the time of their lives and take pictures.

One of the things I love the most about being homeschooled is how involved my parents get in my homework. My mom is my main teacher, even though my dad has gotten involved this year as more than just my principal. I think that having my parents as my teachers is the best. Being able to get one-on-one attention when I need it is extremely helpful.

They know me pretty well and therefore explain things in a way I can understand and are only downstairs or an email or text away if I have a question. Some of the other things I do that I enjoy and which make my schoolwork more interesting include writing creative chapter stories (that I hope to one day finish), drawing and/or photoshopping my own drawings and creations, and writing blog posts.

I love writing and drawing on my own and for school; it makes my school day so much more fun. Also, this year my dad got involved and is helping me through math. With him as my math teacher, I am understanding more and getting more questions right…which is always a good thing. Besides math, my dad is also teaching me art, biology, Latin and history.

Something else that has made homeschooling even better for me is getting to do my school in the order I want and doing it in my quiet room upstairs, since I don’t focus very well in a noisy room. The peace and quiet in my room has made it so I get my work done in a more orderly manner, which is something I might not be able to do downstairs at the kitchen table in the middle of noise central… ☺

I am homeschooled and I enjoy what freedom and adventure it brings.
