All About Reading Review

Let’s talk about teaching reading today, okay?

I’ve homeschooled for eleven years, and in the process have taught five of my seven children how to read. I’ve used countless programs, materials, dvds, and more and still reading and phonics became one of those subjects that in the beginning was exciting but towards the middle became met with groans.

Enter All About Reading.

First, I’m just going to gush – I love this program. It has changed my perception on teaching reading and I actually {gasp} look forward to our All About Reading {produced by All About Learning} lessons. And, to make it even better, my Caleb, who is six, loves his All About Reading times as well.

He asks to start his academic day with All About Reading.

I honestly cannot think of a better – we love this product endorsement – than having your six year old beg to do just another lesson or can we start with this, please? type of endorsement.

But, now, some nitty-gritty for you moms out there. I can hear the questions, they’re questions that I ask as well, like do they learn their letter sounds correctly? and how can phonics be fun? and is it thorough? All About Reading is a multisensory program – meaning that learning is made through touch, sight, and sound. All of this reinforces the essential skills for your readers. All About Reading teaches five essential skills – Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Decoding, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension {taken from their website}.

So often I’ve worked through reading programs with my children that have worked on certain aspects of each of these skills and they separate them out into different components. With All About Reading these skills are seamlessly integrated in each lesson. No longer is vocabulary or comprehension isolated, but rather they are part of every day study. I believe teaching comprehension right away strengthens readers – and the comprehension/discussion questions are fun, enjoyable, and provide this enjoyable time of discussion and interaction each day.

Best of all? My kids enjoy and love working through the lessons. And they’re proud of how they’re reading. Oh yeah, and they love using these fabulous magnetic tiles. It makes learning fun!

Here’s what is in the Level 1 Kit – Level 1 Teacher’s Manual, Level 1 Student Packet, Run, Bug, Run! and The Runt Pig and Cobweb the Cat {decodable readers}. A note on the materials – these are high quality, well-made books. The readers are beautiful hardcover books. One thing that I’ve discovered about early readers is that there is a sense of accomplishment when they can read a chapter book – these hardcover readers are set up like a chapter books – and this builds up confidence in those readers.

You will also need an Interactive Kit. For this review I received the Deluxe which includes: letter tiles with magnets, the Basic Phonograms CD-Rom {this is essential}, Reading Divider Cards, Reading Review Box, Star Stickers {consumable} and Tote Bag. I’m telling you, I love the bag as it keeps our materials together so I don’t have that where’s the reader or the star sticker type of panic in the beginning of our school day. Get the bag {you can see it on the top of the post}. 🙂

Final note – Caleb, who was already reading a bit, has almost finished level one and we’ll be moving onto Level Two in the fall. Now, my  four year old Elijah, will be starting Level One in the fall {or sooner as he’s so excited}. All I have to order is an additional student set and we’re good to go. Easy!

Finally, here’s a short video of my Caleb reading. Watch the delight on his face – thank you All About Learning. 🙂

  2. AAR would be perfect for my DD. I keep eyeing it, but my budget is maxed right now…as usual 🙂

  3. Everyone I know that has tried All About Reading/Spelling LOVE it. I’m hoping it will help me teach my little one to read soon! 🙂

  4. I have a six year old that hates reading he cries every time he has to do phonics. This is his first year of school so since he learned nothing in phonics this year beside his ABC’s not there sound. I am looking for a program to start all back over this comming year and we would love to use this one. I believe this would help a great deal.

  5. I have a 7 year old specail needs daughter that I have struggles with the concept of reading. While she is able to sound each letter out, she runs into a stone wall when combining the sounds together to form a word. She is a kinesthetic learner which poses another issues as phonics is not a kinesthetic friendly subject. I am always on the look out for new methods to try.

  6. My little guy is struggling with his beginning reading and have heard so many wonderful things about AAR that I would love to use it with him to help him gain confidence in his reading ability.

  7. I’ve taught my oldest to read who is going into 3rd grade and now I’m starting on my 5 year old. I would love to be able to try this program out as he is not so enthusiastic about taking the time to learn. He wants to read, but gets easily bored when we start on it lol.

  8. I have a daughter that will be starting K in the fall and an older son that is struggling with reading.

  9. I have a son who will be 5 in a few months and already loves reading words we have been practicing and loves trying to sound out words and read things himself.

  10. I love love love All About Spelling. We are on level two and using the All About Reading level two readers. I taught public school for 11 years and this is the best program I’ve found! My daughter and I love it!

  11. I have a 5 year old who would love this program. The cool tiles seem like the perfect way for him to learn.

  12. My youngest will be 5 in the fall and is just now finishing Pre-Reading AAR. Winning Level One of AAR would be a wonderful thing because the majority of our homeschool budget has to go to my older childrens’ more expensive curricula.

  13. AAR looks like such a great program and I have been wanting to try it with my children. I really like that it is a multisensory program, and that just makes sense to me, but is tough to find in a reading program.

  14. It’s my birthday! What better reason to win an excellent reading program for my 1st grade son?! It will be put to good use because I have a two year coming up right behind him!

  15. I have one who is reading fairly well, and one who is about to begin reading. I have seen this material because a friend has it. I looked at another program that uses the orton gillingham method, but it’s super duper expensive. My oldest (who reads well) does not have the the decoding and spelling skills I would like for her to have. So I’ve been on the prowl for a good program. I really like AAR and think it would be a good review for my oldest and a good start for my youngest. Plus, they have another sibling who will be reading in a few years … so it would be nice to have this for her too!

  16. I love All About Spelling!!! They didn’t have All About Reading when I started teaching my son. But I have another son that will start school in a few years and I will DEFINITELY use AAR!!!!

  17. My 5 year old son has some developmental delays. I’ve been looking for a program that would make learning to read a joyful experience for him. Sounds like I need to look into this program. Thanks for your review. Hope we win!

  19. I LOVE All About Spelling. I have used EVERY reading program under the sun (because of 2 struggling readers). For #4, I would LOVE to try out this program!!! Thanks for this review!! 😉

  20. My youngest will be 4 in July and is reading some small words. This would be great to start with her in the Fall!

  21. I am a new homeschooling mom. I have a 6 year old boy who is less than passionate about reading, after a very bad kindergarten experience. I would LOVE to have this program in our home. Hopefully, it could renew a love of learning in my son.

  22. I have a 6 year old who has struggled with reading this year as many beginning readers do, but it is finally starting to click with him and he is able to read words in some his favorite books which is very motivating. We will be starting All ABout Spelling next year and I am very excited to see him progress even farther!

  23. My son is ready to start reading. He watches me do All About Spelling with his older brother and always wants to jump in. I know he’d love this!

  24. My daughter and I have been working on phonics and some early readers, but besides some sight word memorization, she still seems to take a minute to “flow” with her reading.

  25. My 5 year old Ds picked up sight words quickly. I’ve tried introducing phonics and he gives me the “p-sha” look. My 2 year old Ds picks up on everything his big brother does, so he’s not too far behind. I’ve been eyeing this program for awhile and would be blessed to win!

  26. My 7yo son is still not interested in reading storybooks on his own and I believe it’s because he lacks confidence in his reading ability. This program would help fill some holes, I think.

  27. I have 4 year twin girls that would love this. I do not homeschool officially (yet) but this would be so great to add to our day!

  28. I’m desperate to find something to teach my 8 y.o. son to read. I don’t know if level 1 would be right for him or not but he swears he can’t read a thing (he can read a little). He HATES reading and has made me hate teaching him reading. 🙁

  29. I would love this. I have 3 dyslexic kids, and I’ve already spent so much money trying to teach them to read. I’m wondering if this would work.

  30. I have a son in K who can read very basic readers but HATES our current program so is currently refusing to read to me. Although I do find him trying to read to himself. I have a almost 4 yr old who knows the sounds for most letters and thanks to hearing her brother can spell a few words. I SO want a program she will enjoy!!

  31. I hope to teach my 4-year-old son to read this summer and I’ve heard wonderful things about this program.

  32. I have a soon to be first grader who is working on reading. The current program, that worked for my son, is not working as well for my daughter. This looks like her type of program.

  33. I have a 7 year old who is reading pretty well and an almost 4 year old who I believe would love this program!

  34. It sounds great to have one curriculum for reading that covers so many aspects of how kids learn to read. I know my little guy starting kindergarten next fall could sure benefit from All About Reading!

  35. the ones that would be using this program would be a 5 yr old, Zaporah, and a 7 yr old Toby… last month i was helping to homeschool them when their mom was trying to get them back on schedule… I found that the 5 yr old (girl) was way ahead of the 7 yr old. It was very hard each day for me as she was already starting to read and I had to work slower with the 7 yr old, and he was also very frustrated that his younger sister was going way past him… Both this program for reading and the other one for spelling would help in teaching both of them so much, and allow both their mom and I, when I am helping out, to have a great program to work with. Thanks so much for a great review and giveaway opp.

Are the divider cards the same for both programs or I will I need order one set for each spelling and reading? TIA!

  125. Could somebody please recommend a program similar to this for a 3rd and 4th grader? I’m struggling to find a good reading curriculum. This is our first year homeschooling, so I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed!

    Thanks! 🙂

    1. Hi Krystal! You might want to post your question on the Hip Homeschool Moms Facebook wall. We have lots of friends on that page who are great about giving suggestions and sharing information. Hope you have a wonderful school year! The first year can definitely feel overwhelming! Blessings to you and your family.
