Let’s talk about teaching reading today, okay?
I’ve homeschooled for eleven years, and in the process have taught five of my seven children how to read. I’ve used countless programs, materials, dvds, and more and still reading and phonics became one of those subjects that in the beginning was exciting but towards the middle became met with groans.

First, I’m just going to gush – I love this program. It has changed my perception on teaching reading and I actually {gasp} look forward to our All About Reading {produced by All About Learning} lessons. And, to make it even better, my Caleb, who is six, loves his All About Reading times as well.
He asks to start his academic day with All About Reading.
I honestly cannot think of a better – we love this product endorsement – than having your six year old beg to do just another lesson or can we start with this, please? type of endorsement.

But, now, some nitty-gritty for you moms out there. I can hear the questions, they’re questions that I ask as well, like do they learn their letter sounds correctly? and how can phonics be fun? and is it thorough? All About Reading is a multisensory program – meaning that learning is made through touch, sight, and sound. All of this reinforces the essential skills for your readers. All About Reading teaches five essential skills – Phonological Awareness, Phonics and Decoding, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension {taken from their website}.

So often I’ve worked through reading programs with my children that have worked on certain aspects of each of these skills and they separate them out into different components. With All About Reading these skills are seamlessly integrated in each lesson. No longer is vocabulary or comprehension isolated, but rather they are part of every day study. I believe teaching comprehension right away strengthens readers – and the comprehension/discussion questions are fun, enjoyable, and provide this enjoyable time of discussion and interaction each day.
Best of all? My kids enjoy and love working through the lessons. And they’re proud of how they’re reading. Oh yeah, and they love using these fabulous magnetic tiles. It makes learning fun!

Here’s what is in the Level 1 Kit – Level 1 Teacher’s Manual, Level 1 Student Packet, Run, Bug, Run! and The Runt Pig and Cobweb the Cat {decodable readers}. A note on the materials – these are high quality, well-made books. The readers are beautiful hardcover books. One thing that I’ve discovered about early readers is that there is a sense of accomplishment when they can read a chapter book – these hardcover readers are set up like a chapter books – and this builds up confidence in those readers.
You will also need an Interactive Kit. For this review I received the Deluxe which includes: letter tiles with magnets, the Basic Phonograms CD-Rom {this is essential}, Reading Divider Cards, Reading Review Box, Star Stickers {consumable} and Tote Bag. I’m telling you, I love the bag as it keeps our materials together so I don’t have that where’s the reader or the star sticker type of panic in the beginning of our school day. Get the bag {you can see it on the top of the post}.

Final note – Caleb, who was already reading a bit, has almost finished level one and we’ll be moving onto Level Two in the fall. Now, my four year old Elijah, will be starting Level One in the fall {or sooner as he’s so excited}. All I have to order is an additional student set and we’re good to go. Easy!
Finally, here’s a short video of my Caleb reading. Watch the delight on his face – thank you All About Learning.

I have been searching for a great reading curriculum for several months and I was so excited when a friend showed me All About Reading! I love this program and we will start using it this year with my boys!!
I have a 7 and a 5 year old. The seven year old, he just needs encouragement, reading is not his “thing”. He gets fiscouraged so easily, says its too hard. He is my learn completely opposite from the other 3 kids kid;0). The 5 year old is just starting so it would benefit her by giving her a great start!
My five year old is in the beginning stages of reading. I love his big smile when he gets a word right.
I have three young readers! 7,6, and 4.
I would love to have this program for my boys. I love that is hands on and incorporates 3 different learning approaches. It would be great to win it.
My boy will be 7 at the end of July. He hasn’t loved learning to read (though he LOVES being read to!), so we’ve gone very slowly with him. He gets frustrated very easily, but it’s starting to get a *little* bit easier for him.
My girl is 3 and I haven’t done much with her yet in the reading/letter recognition department. Just letting her learn through playing for now. =)
I love AAR soooo much! My almost six year old finished Run Bug Run (vol 1 reader) yesterday! He is doing so well!
My five year old is trying to take off without me! He’s teaching himself as much as he can. I think AAR would probably be the quickest way to get him reading for real!
Thank you so much for your review. I am very excited about AAR, and it’s encouraging to see great reviews!
I have a 4 year old that wants to learn to read like his big brother and I have been thinking about getting this program to start with him in the fall
I have a nearly 5yo and he is interested in reading… This would be a great help!
I am so excited to get started with this program (along with the spelling one). I have a four year old, a three year old, a 16 month old and we are expecting number four in September. We are just getting started with all of this homeschooling curriculum, but have been working with the kids in our own way since birth. My four year old and three year old are so excited to read. They are great with letter recognition and sounds and know quite a few sight words. I am so excited to get a program that will help us glide straight into all the rest!!!
my little one is 4 and is “reading” books on her own, recognizes many sight words and really wants to read on her own. have heard great things about this product
I have a 4 yr. old who would is eager to start reading so he can reading like his 9 yr. old big siter
I LOve this program and this would be a great program to add to our household
Would love to win this.
I will have a 1st and 2nd grader this coming year. My youngest is struggling to blend words together. I would love to have All About Reading to help him. It looks like a wonderful program.
We just started using AAR & AAS…and I just have to say … wow! Definitely do not skip any of the steps! Our youngest children already knew all the letter (upper/lowercase) and sounds…but needed the practice with learning syllables and blending. We play “hop to it” with really long words now! The spelling is great too! Did I say…wow?
I have a 4 yr old who is an advance reader, so I would love to jump into All About Reading level 1!
I have two 5-1/2 year olds who will be starting Kindergarten in the fall. I would LOVE to use this reading program with them both! This is a wonderful product! I can’t wait to teach them to read!!!
My son is 4 and just beginning to try to read on his own. I haven’t forced any letters on him just let him “play” practice. Thinking it would be wonderful to start with this program…. wasn’t impressed with the program I used with my now 9 yr old daughter. I spent over 2 years trying to undo the damage that program caused in her reading. Heard nothing but great things in regards to All About Reading. Fingers crossed! =)
I would love to use this for my children who are learning to read.
I have an almost 5 year old that loves AAR Pre-1 level. I am so excited about this program. I have an 8 year old that is struggling with reading and I plan to use parts of the pre-1 and level 1 to fill in some holes.
I have 2 young readers one who is almost 5 and one who is 7- we would greatly benefit from this product. thanks!
My son will be starting Kindergarten in the Fall and we have decided to homeschool. We are so excited about is interest in reading as my husband and myself are HUGE readers!! He “reads” his books every night before going to bed. He has even started trying to sound out words on his own!! Can’t wait to begin the program!!
My daughter LOVES to read…this would be great!!
My almost 4 year old is really interested in reading. He recognizes words and knows all the letter sounds. I’m clueless on how to teach him how to read, so this would be a great way to start off!
I have a 6yr old son who is struggling with LD’s . He will be starting AAR in the fall. Thank you for your wonderful review on AAR, it has me very excited to start!
I have a question. I am ordering this and All About Spelling for the first time. The All About Spelling has some of the stuff that you listed in the All About Reading Deluxe Kit, correct? Are the divider cards the same for both programs or I will I need order one set for each spelling and reading? TIA!
Could somebody please recommend a program similar to this for a 3rd and 4th grader? I’m struggling to find a good reading curriculum. This is our first year homeschooling, so I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed!
Thanks!
